Well, Christmas has come and gone, and no doubt we are all trying to get back into the full swing of things for 2020 – the start of a new decade!
Firstly, I would like to reflect on the current bush fires and the sheer enormity of what our country has been through (and still going through) since the fires first started in NSW and Queensland late last year.
– At least 34 people have been killed,
– Almost 3,000 homes destroyed,
– An estimated 1 billion animals have been killed,18.6 million+ hectares have been burned (to put this into perspective, the Amazon fires that left the world reeling in August 2019 saw approx. 1 million hectares burned).
I struggle to comprehend how those families, friends, communities & businesses directly impacted by the loss of loved ones, homes and cherished family memories, are dealing with the grief of such personal tragedy and heartbreak. My thoughts, like all at Pursuit, go out to all those impacted.
Financially, there are some crazy numbers being thrown around (in the billions of $’s) regarding loss of revenue from tourism and visitors to not just the towns directly impacted but throughout Australia. For example, some areas are experiencing cancellations of over 50% on accommodation and tourist related visitors. Media coverage (including social) of the fires has unfortunately driven away international and interstate visitors in the thousands – so what can we do?
These communities need the support of our nation & the world, and not just now, but into the future. Therefore, please consider what you can do to help these communities get back on their feet: whether it be a financial contribution to one of the many reputable charities, volunteering your time to help in some capacity, visiting these towns (when safe to do so) and buying their goods or enjoying their services. Please do what you can to support and encourage others to help drive tourism and commerce back to these areas now, as later is likely to be too late.
