The Inside Look April

Challenge Time

During the month of March, I made a commitment to a fellow team member that I would not work more than a certain number of hours of overtime, and if I did, she would be able to enforce the consequences we agreed to at the beginning of the year – No social media for 7 days.

Fast forward a month. I broke the commitment and have just finished 7 days of no social media – and I am better for it, who would have thought!! If you had asked me if I was addicted to social media I would have said no. The truth is, I was well on the way!

Since completing the 7 day social media detox, I am so much more aware of the choices I make in relation to what I use my phone for. For me, the two biggest vises I had were:
1) Aimlessly scrolling the Facebook news feed, and
2) Checking out everyone’s run on Strava.

From now on, I am going to be so much more deliberate with my use of technology, especially social media and focus on being more effective with the use of my time.

The Challenge: Are you using your phone as a tool, or is it controlling you??
If it is the latter….

– Check out the screen time in your phone settings for the past 7 days. Yep wow!
– Turn your phone onto silent or even airplane mode when you go to bed.
– Don’t touch your phone for the 1st hour or 2 each morning.
– Delete your social media apps (or even put them in a folder, click here to find out how).

Gees, the tips could go on – if you want to know more about why we become addicted to our phones and the impact it has on our relationships, check out the clip below from our good friend Simon Sinek.

Simon Sinek Q & A: How Do Cell Phones Impact Our Relationships

Immediate Action Needed!
Reminder of Trust Deeds Amendments

As per our previous mail out, we would like to —remind those of our clients that own or plan to own real property in Victoria or NSW through a trust structure, that you must ensure that your trust deed includes the relevant exclusions which are stated below.

As of NOW, all trust deeds for purchasing property must be amended to exclude foreign beneficiaries, regardless of if a foreign person will be benefitting or not. Trusts that have a foreign person as a potential beneficiary will automatically be classified as a foreign trust and will now be liable for foreign purchaser additional duty.

To put these new fees into perspective, if you own or purchase a property for $500,000, this could lead to an additional cost of $40,000! So even if you aren’t looking to buy right now but might in the future then it’s best to get this taken care of right away, rather than waiting until it’s too late.

To ensure you aren’t caught out, we strongly advise if the above applies to you, to get in touch with your advisor today and we will perform a review of your Trust Deed. We want to ensure your hard-earned money is kept safe and you are not subject to any unnecessary charges.

Xero Update –
Securing Your Account With Multi-Factor Authentication

As more people around the world embrace digital technologies, the number of cyber attacks continues to increase.

As custodians of your data, Xero takes that responsibility very seriously and goes above and beyond to secure your online information. To stay ahead of cyber criminals, they are making Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) mandatory for all Xero customers globally in the year ahead.

MFA is a log-in verification process utilizing your phone authentication method as well as your username and password, which means you can still access your Xero account anywhere, at any time.

To give you fast, easy and secure access to your Xero account using MFA, they’ve created their own authenticator app called Xero Verify. It’s built using the highest security standards and is now available free of charge in the Apple and Google app stores.

Extension To HomeBuilder Construction Deadline

The deadline to begin construction under the HomeBuilder grants program has been extended by an additional 12 months by the Federal Government.

The HomeBuilder scheme was introduced last year during the COVID-19 pandemic and was extended to March 2021, although the size of grants were reduced from $25,000 to $15,000. Private house approvals have risen by almost 70 percent, fuelled by this program as well as record low-interest rates.

The scheme is said to cost the government $2.5 billion but has helped tip some $30 billion into Australia’s construction sector. The uptake of HomeBuilder has created a lifeline of work for tradies, preventing job losses as well as supporting tens of thousands of first home buyers to achieve their dream of owning their own home.

The deadline change has been a welcomed relief to many in the industry as the extension will now ease the pressure on home builders to begin construction, with 70 percent of builders having been severely impacted by global supply constraints and labour pressures as well as delays in finance approvals, planning, building approvals and land titles due to the influx.
